Website Niche Competitiveness
In some of my past articles, I have talked about most popular keywords, writing content, SEO optimization, social networking, all ways to get your site on your way to the top in a methodical fashion. Unfortunately, you will find certain website industries are usually non-starters, or tough to get to high traffic sites.
SEO Challenged:
The first one is what I would like to call being SEO challenged. If you have read some of my previous articles you will see the importance I put on SEO(search engine optimization) and writing lots of unique content. For most websites this is more important for gaining traffic than any other factor. Unfortunately, there are some website topics/industries that are real tough using this process, to get to your way to a high traffic site.
There can be one or two reasons why this may happen:
Pagerank: There are some website topics where you will be competing with many news or “official” sites in the search engines. These sites will all have high PR and have authority from being in the search engines for many years. What this means, is you don’t have a chance for many years to get anywhere near the top of the search engines.
Usually on most websites, you can just blog on many topics and you will get a lot of hits from each blog post. If your competing against many high PR sites, you will find that even getting significant hits from non-competitive keyword phrases will be a big challenge. It will be a struggle to get a lot of search engine traffic, no matter how SEO optimized your site. Even if you increase your pagerank, the other sites will still have more authority then yours for many years to come, which will keep them in the top ranks.
What are some examples of these kinds of sites? Political and sports team blogs are notorious for this. With sports and Political you are competing against many high PR news and official sites. SEO and blogging 4 money related sites are pretty difficult too because many webmasters of these sites, know SEO very well and how to get to the top with high pagerank.
Keyword variety: Let’s go back to our example of sports team blogs. With most blogs, you can talk about a wide variety of topics. Your titles and blog posts will use all sorts of keywords and combinations of them. This means people will find your site accidentally, through keyword search phrases(usually 3 or more words) by accident. Unfortunately, in this case a sports team blog, there isn’t as much variety. You will be always talking about the same team, the same players, and the same league for years. In the example of a political blog, the same thing will happen. You will probably wind up talking about the same political issues and people over and over again for years to come. This overlap means your less likely to “snag” a new search engine keyword string of good rank by accident.
So what does being SEO challenged mean? It means that you will have to do a lot more writing, to get the same traffic from the search engines. In most websites that have medium pagerank, you should average a few hits for each unique blog post you do on a topic. In SEO challenged sites, you will be lucky to get even a half dozen hits on a particular blog post, from uncompetitive keyword searches.
Name Recognition Challenged:
Another factor at work that will keep some internet dreamers from being able to retire from their 9-5, is what I call being Name Recognition Challenged. Any person wanting to start a online commercial business site, will be name recognition challenged. People prefer to buy stuff from things they know about, such as for example, Google or Yahoo.
Before starting a website idea, you have to see what kind of websites are your direct competitors. If you want to start your own PPC advertising site for example, you will be competing against well established business such as Google Adsense. That means it will require thousands of dollars to be spent in advertising revenue, design, programming, hosting. On top of that, why would anyone want to join an unestablished network with no name recognition? You may have visions of becoming a millionaire starting your next PPC network, but you also take on a big risk of spending tens of thousands and going into bankruptcy.
Any cures?
In the case of being name recognition challenged, there is no cure. If you want to start a commercial business online, you will have to take the financial risk and hope your business takes off. You will have to go out there and promote your site and spend big money to get it started.
If you are SEO challenged, then concentrate on other methods to get the word out for these kinds of sites. That means social networking, writing good content, and being extra patient. If you write good content, then people will slowly subscribe to your site and give you repeat visits in the long run. You need to be patient because eventually everything will add up over time with SEO challenged sites. Over time you will get backlinks from other sites too just based on your content. You will also want to actively blogroll with bloggers of similiar topics(if your using a blog).
If your a webmaster of a SEO challenged site, Pagerank will be something you want to spend more time working on than usual. Over time you will slowly get more search engine traffic. The more you write and the higher your pagerank gets, but remember that with SEO challenged sites, it will be always be very slow and steady. Think in terms of years and not months with getting good search engine traffic with these sites.
