Understanding Google Pagerank

Pagerank in simple terms, is basically a way to find out who is popular or has something important to say among the millions of websites out there.

How Google Pagerank works:

Each time a site passes a link to another page it gives it a “vote” towards increasing it’s pagerank value. Each page on a website will have different pagerank values depending on what pagerank backlinks it receives. The pagerank function is a recursive function. In other words, the Google spider goes through a bunch of internal calculations by following through a network of links between websites. Through this process it finds out who is linking to who and to what degree. After it calculates this, it gives each web page a PR number.

The pagerank function is logarithmic. In other words a PR site of 5 is going to have many more times the “voting power” to another site than a pagerank 1 site. Very few sites link to PR 1 sites, and the ones that do usually have low PR’s themselves. If it had some higher PR sites linking to it, than it would have a higher PR than 1. It will take a lot more low PR sites to increase your website’s PR number, than if you just had a few high PR backlinks. Your goal should be to place more importance on getting backlinks from a few sites with high PR instead of trying to get it from dozens of low PR sites.

One thing you must keep in mind is that sites that give you a redirect or a nofollow in the tag, will not give you any Pagerank. Many sites sneak these into the link tags, so it’s important you check beforehand the source code of the page.

Internal Pagerank flow:

There is a way to improve the pagerank on all the pages of your website slightly, without getting more backlinks. It is done by manipulating how the google spider “follows” the pages of your website.

In order to do this, on every page you should have a link pointing to another page in the website. There should be no pages where there is not another page linking to it. In other words, the Google spider should be able to follow from one link and get to every other page of your entire website by following links. Think of it as being able to draw a stickman without picking up the pencil. At the end of that link “chain”, the Google spider should be able to “loop back” to the first page so it can increase everyone’s internal PR numbers.

Before you do this, you must figure out though which is the most important webpage on your site. This will be the page that you want to have slightly more PR than any other page on your website. For most sites, it’s the front of the website. On other sites it may be the forum or blog directory you want emphasis on for SEO (search engine optimization) purposes.

For example Lets say you have Page A,B,C. Page A is the one you chose as the one you want the highest PR value of all 3. In order for the recursive calculations to give you maximum internal PR to each page, but slightly more to page A, you should have a link in page A point to B, B than point back to A, another link in Page A point to Page C, and C point also back to A.

The reason why this works is because you are using Page A’s power to “bounce back” to it again. If you were to have A –>B —C—> —> A ,like one big loop, the PR would get diluted among all the pages along the way. As a result, Page A wouldn’t get the targeted boost in it’s PR value compared to the other 3.

Pagerank and outgoing links:

Each link’s pagerank voting power is based on the page’s pagerank divided by how many outgoing links there are. For example, a high PR site with many links is not gonna have as much PR passing value per link than if it has very few outgoing links on it’s site. As a result, you can help your internal pages’ pagerank by putting nofollow tags on outgoing links to other websites. Nofollow tags rel=”nofollow” are put inside your href link tag.

The use of these nofollow tags on these links is a way to increase the pagerank voting power of the rest of the links you don’t put a nofollow on. In other words, you increase the pagerank voting power for one internal page to the next, by not diluting your pagerank votes as a result of the other outgoing links.

For example, in our previous example, the links going between A, B, and C should not have nofollow’s on them. You will want to put a nofollow on other outgoing links on those webpages that are pointing to other people’s websites.

Reciprocal vs one way backlinks:

In general reciprocal links don’t do as much for boosting Pagerank as a “one way” link. When a site gives you a one way backlink, Google sees this as more of an “honest vote” for a good quality site. Getting a lot of reciprocal links is OK, it’s just that you should only link out to sites relevant to your website’s topic and be careful of what type of sites you choose.

Google Pagerank Penalty Just a “Vanity” Mark?

Recently, like many other bloggers, my pagerank was penalized to zero. Some freak out thinking that a penalization of your pagerank literally means you will lose all your rankings in the search engine. Others have theorized that it simply is a special visible punishment mark for selling links and that you actually maintain your “real” Google pagerank and therefore rankings in the search engine. I can confirm that it is nothing more than a vanity mark because my site was a PR3 after the Google update and then 10 days later it was zeroed, so it appears to have been a penalty. I’m not sure which site specifically caused the PR penalty, but what I do know that my traffic rankings never changed in Google and were better than ever. Later on my PR then jumped to a PR 2 out of nowhere, without doing anything.

So what does this tell me?

Getting punished by Google for selling text link ads does not effect your rankings in the search engine. It is merely for show
to try and discourage people from selling links. What it probably does hurt, is you won’t be passing pagerank from your site. But it PROBABLY doesn’t effect your ability to pass overall link authority to other sites for other factors. Google ranks authority (the same thing that decides your rank in the search engine) of a website on a hundred different factors. Even if Google zeroes out your pagerank, a backlink from a penalized site, still probably has value because of the age of the domain, content, it’s backlinks, etc. You will be passing everything else, but pagerank, which is only a small portion of value in a backlink in Google anyways.

About MSN Adcenter - PPC Advertising Network

MSN Adcenter is the PPC advertising network for their Live search engine and has been operating since 2005. It works similiar to Google Adwords and Yahoo’s Search Marketing. Earlier in 07 MSN added a lot of new features, so if you checked it out a couple years ago as an advertiser, you may want to look at it again. Adcenter is now accepting publishers too. There standards are high for the publisher program, so dont bother applying unless you have a high quality traffic site. I don’t know anything about the publisher aspect, since I haven’t been accepted yet.

Advantages to MSN adcenter for advertisers:

Since MSN adcenter is newer than the other two, bid prices will be less competitive (i.e cheaper!). Users are reporting that it’s easier to manage than Yahoo, but not as good as Google Adwords. It’s good for newbies to affiliate/website marketing as you can get started for only 5 dollars and minimum keyword bid is 5 cents. If you are already doing Google Adwords and Yahoo, you should add MSN adcenter into the mix and see how it compares.

How To Alternate Ads Between Posts on Wordpress

On some of my blogs on the front page, I alternate ads after the blog posts. It is a useful way to blend in ads inside your content on the front page. As far as I know there is no plugin that does it like this, so I had to custom code it, but I’ll tell you how, its not too complicated.

The first thing you need to do is go into the wp-includes folder. Inside go to the general-template.php file (in older versions it will be called something else.)

Inside you will create a PHP function. In this format

function get_advertisement() {

echo ‘

****AD CODE GOES HERE****

‘;

}

You will cut n paste the code for your PPC advertisment after the echo ‘ part. For some reason wordpress shows this ‘ differently then it should, so don’t cut n paste this code and use it. Just type it in through your keyboard instead so you get the right ‘ character.

What you acheived is you created a function called get_advertisement. Everytime it is “called” somewhere else it will display what is inside that echo part. Echo in PHP means to output to the display. One thing to keep in mind is if there is any ‘ in your PPC ad code you will need to do to put the backslash before it like \’ this or else you will get a PHP error.

Now the next step is to go to your index.php file inside your themes folder(for example, if it’s default them then default folder).

Open the file and find the following code:

<?php while (have_posts()) : the_post(); ?>

Add this line of code before it:

<?php $count=0;?>

Next find this line of code:

<?php endwhile; ?>

Add this line of code before it:

<?php if ( $count % 3 == 1 ) : get_advertisement(); endif; $count++; ?>

This will cause a loop function and alternate the showing of the ad
inside the get_advertisement function. You can modify the count % 3 == 1 part to different numbers. Changing the numbers will modify on which blog post the very first ad is shown, and how many blog posts between each ad.

Reader’s Digest Widgets

Widgets are little applications that are easy to embed on your personal or commercial website. Widgets can come in many forms, from games to information and stats to even useful software tools. Widgets are easy to add to your website by simply cutting and pasting the code. The widgest code will work on any website including even social personal sites like myspace or facebook or even on your personalized desktop through iGoogle or Netvibes and many others. There are many ReadersDigest.com Widgets available for free.

Two of the most popular Reader’s digest widgets is their daily laughs and word power widgets. Below I copy and pasted the code (also known as embed) of these two widgets.

You can see a full directory of all the jokes that the widget is bringing them from the RD Laughs Main page.

If you have a faceback page then you may want to look at their Prop My Photo widget, which can add a lot of flare and turn your funny photos into hilarious ones. They are even giving out prizes to the silliest photos. They also have a toolbar, which allows you to have an easier time getting content up from Reader’s digest and different channels including your local weather.

I encourage you to check out these widgets and others and add them to your site!

How To Rank Better in Google Image Search

Everyone is so worried about getting their traffic through the main Google search engine, that they forget a lot of searches Going on through Google Image Search. I’ve read from some other bloggers that a significant amount of their traffic was found through Google image search once they learned how to manipulate it.

Google Image Search Ranking Factors:

1) The usual factors such as Pagerank will still be a factor. So don’t expect to be usually on the first few pages of Google image search for competitive keywords, unless you have some authority in the search engines.

2) Put an alt=”" and title=”" tags in your images describing your image. Put the same descriptive keyword(s) inside the name of the image filename and seperate the major keywords with a hyphen(-). Setting the width=”" and height=”" tags in the image url also is said to help with ranking factors.

3) It appears the filename, alt tag, and the context of the page are the most important. If your page has a title or written content with the keyword along with the image, it will help rank you better for image search.

To start getting the benefits of Google image search you can do this by putting a picture in all your blog posts. I often find it a bit of a hassle, so often I never get around to doing it.
