This is post is about reducing Blog comment spam for those using the most popular blog software wordpress.

Dollars Blog gets decent traffic and as a result spammers seem to find my site a lot too. I was getting on average between 10 to 100 spam comments before I put a halt to it a couple months ago.

Askimet comes with the newer releases of WordPress already installed as a plugin. In order to activate it you need to sign up an account at wordpress.org. Once you have created the blog go into your blog admin panel and there will be the activation code there on the dashboard. You will cut n paste this activation key to your other blogs when activating the askimet plugin. This plugin is a anti-spam miracle, it takes out 99% of the spam.

I also use another plugin in addition to it. This plugin is called the TanTanNoodles Spam Filter. How it works is if a post has 5 or more links in it, or has something in the short list of spam words, it will automatically zap the post before it even enters the moderation queue. This will also shorten the length of askimet’s queue if you happen to check that queue once in a while to make sure askimet isn’t blocking everything in site.

Tan tan noodles has a special time limited token for an additional step, if legitimate comments get blocked in the process. Another feature about tan tan noodles spam plugin is that it has an easy way to add any new words from blocked spam at the click of a mouse. This will make it easier to block spam in the future if Askimet or Tan tan noodles don’t catch it.

With these two plugins together, I’ve eliminated 99.5% of my spam. I don’t even have to worry about blog comment spam in wordpress anymore. Some choose to make their blog register only to get around spam, but personally I think that’s a huge mistake. I never post comments on blogs usually that require a register as it’s a big hassle. Part of having a blog I think, is making it easy for people to want to respond to your blog posts.
